Tips for Surviving the Summer

Who doesn’t love summer? It’s a time for fun, relaxation, and adventure or whatever suits you best! Summer is when most people take time off to enjoy quality time with family and friends or to travel, but the one drawback that everyone feels is the stifling heat and humidity.

We’ve compiled a list of tips for you to follow so you can avoid the drawbacks of summer and make the most of the fun! Keep reading to learn more.

The Northeast is known for its hot and humid summers. The average summer temperature in New Jersey is nearly 77 degrees, which might seem mild compared to the deserts in Arizona and California, but what they don’t have is the humidity. What may seem like a comfortable 77 quickly turns into a smothering heat when you factor in the 77 percent humidity on top of that.

While you can’t do much to impact or change the outside temperature and humidity, you can have an impact on your comfort within your home. A well-maintained air conditioning unit will help you to control the temperature, and whole home or portable dehumidifier will help to regulate the moisture indoors.

With all of the additional moisture in the air, there’s also an influx of insects. Purchasing a dehumidifier for your home will also help to minimize the presence of bugs within your home but installing screens over your windows and doors will also help to do the trick! When you venture outdoors, make sure to apply bug spray along with your sunscreen and bring a can with you to combat them!

There are two main types of fans that we would recommend to help improve your home’s comfort this summer: exhaust fans and ceiling fans.

Exhaust Fans

Exhaust fans are the ones that you usually find in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. These fans are specifically for removing heat and moisture from the air and displacing it outside so that cool air from your air conditioning can replace it.

Ceiling Fans

These are regarded as the most effective type of fan because they are able to circulate large amounts of air throughout a room, creating a draft. According to the Department of Energy, using a ceiling fan will enable you to raise your thermostat 4 degrees without losing any of the comfort in your home.

It is important to remember that there are two different settings on your ceiling fan, a summer setting and a winter one. The summer setting rotates the blades counter-clockwise which forces air down into the room providing a windchill effect. The winter setting does the opposite and draws air up towards the ceiling, which forces warm air down and towards the walls in order to avoid the windchill effect.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

One of the best things you can do for yourself, your home and your air conditioning unit is to keep it well maintained. This includes getting repairs as soon as they’re needed and not waiting until the unit has completely broken down, and getting seasonal and preventative maintenance. You might think getting preventative maintenance is a waste of money, but it will actually be a huge financial and time saver in the long run.
