How to Keep Your Home Cool

While your air conditioning unit is the most effective tool for keeping your home cool in the middle of summer, there are a few other tools you can utilize to take some stress off of your HVAC and keep your home comfortable.

Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool During Summer

We’ve compiled a few tips to help keep your home cool and comfortable all summer long.

Fans

Fans work by circulating air throughout rooms and creating a draft that can allow you to raise your thermostat setting about 4°F with no decrease in comfort.

Some of the most common fan types include:

  • Window fans

These use a small amount of energy and should be placed in the windows near the cooler shaded areas of your home.

  • Ceiling fans

According to the Department of Energy, ceiling fans are the most effective because they are typically larger and can push more air throughout the room and with greater force. Remember to turn your ceiling fan off when you leave the room because they work by cooling people and not rooms.

Ventilation

As the temperatures begin to rise during the summer, we tend to close up our homes to keep the hot air out. Unfortunately, this means heat gets trapped along with stale, musty air. Natural ventilation is a great way to minimize this effect and cool your home, especially at night.

Thermostat

When it’s 90 degrees outside, and the humidity is through the roof all you want to do is escape to your home and crank up the AC. However, this can be a significant waste of energy and will leave you with massive bills over the course of the summer. The smaller the difference is between your indoor temperature and the temperature outside, the lower your cooling bill.

The ideal temperature in your home during the summer is 78°F but should only be left this low when you are at home. Programmable thermostats can help you to regulate this so that you don’t have to adjust the thermostat every time you enter or leave your home.

Using these tips will help to keep the temperature in your home lower and make your home more comfortable while lowering your energy bills at the same time. For all of your cooling needs and questions, contact the experts at Dean’s Service!
